COMMONHOLD NOW is a grassroots campaign organisation committed to extending real homeownership in England and Wales. We seek an end to residential leasehold for simpler and fairer commonhold tenure – and to achieve reforms to end the financial abuse of new-build homeowners on managed estates, known as ‘fleecehold’.
Our mission is to see flat and homeowners gain control of their property, areas they use in common and interest in the land, by;
Momentum is building, but it is not organised effectively to force meaningful and thoroughgoing change. There are also dangers that commonhold is neglected and that wealthy property industry interests will force the Law Commission reforms to be watered down, or shelved altogether.
More broadly, the next general election is less than two years away and will be closely fought. Our goals appeal directly to both Conservative values of ‘taking back control’ and homeownership, as well as to Labour values of fairness, rebalancing power and combating corporate abuse. Millions of leaseholder votes are up for grabs for the party that delivers reform.
This is the perfect landscape for a groundswell of public pressure to secure the changes we seek.
Now is the time for a mass movement to pressure MPs of all parties to stand up for all homeowners, get these reforms into law and promote Commonhold in Parliament.
But to apply enough pressure, we need YOUR support!
Karolina is a founding director and has an international background in market-disrupting services and housing campaigns.
She has 30 years of in-depth experience with Australian Strata title, EU co-ownership and leasehold RTM director. Is a pro-commonhold expert and strongly campaigns for simpler and easier commonhold reforms. Karolina knows all too well that by implementing these important law reforms, people will be real owners with control over their buildings, lives and money.
Leveraging her vast leasehold and commonhold experience, she provides vital information to leaseholders who often struggle to understand this complex world.
She has an MBA.
The current Freehold Reform Bill is welcome.
Harry Scoffin is a founding director, journalist and LSE postgraduate who made waves working at the charity Leasehold Knowledge Partnership for four years, telling leaseholders’ stories and exposing overcharging in leasehold blocks. His work has been published by outlets including the Independent, the Sunday Times and the Telegraph.
He also has a direct interest in achieving a mass shift to Commonhold, living in his family home where the service charges have skyrocketed by £10,000 in 5 years and acting as deputy chair of the mixed-use block’s residents association. He has lived in Singapore and happily experienced its version of Commonhold in strata title. In 2022, he was shortlisted for Housing / Residential Property Journalist of the Year by the International Building Press.
Helen Jansen is a RICS chartered surveyor with an intimate knowledge of Australian strata title, with both extensive property management and commonhold experience. After decades of experience with her own leasehold property here and her experience with residential abroad, she understands that leasehold is misrepresented as homeownership.
Helen believes that leasehold is detrimental to the market and has seen how the freehold alternative builds confidence and enables owners to have decision-making powers that don’t exist under leasehold.
She frequently advises – and challenges – her colleagues in the sector over endemic leasehold management issues. She has an MBA from the London Business School.
